The importance of mobile marketing continues to grow each year, and a new study from Arbitron and Edison Research shows exactly why it’s so important to target customers through their cell phones. Researchers found that 52 percent of cell phone owners always have their phones within arm’s reach—and an additional 30 percent of mobile owners have their phones within arm’s reach most of the time.

Some people say that Americans are addicted to their cell phones, reaching for the devices first thing in the morning and putting them down only at night. As it turns out, this opinion might not be entirely off-base. 30 percent of Americans ages 12 and over wake up with their cell phones in the morning rather than using an alarm clock (22 percent of Americans) or a clock radio (15 percent). The number increases to 59 percent when you narrow the field to look only at Americans between the ages of 18 and 34.

According to the study, mobile device owners used smartphones to engage in the following activities:

  • 97 percent of users made and received calls
  • 94 percent sent and received text messages
  • 90 percent took pictures
  • 83 percent browsed the Internet
  • 63 percent used social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter
  • 21 percent scanned QR codes

It’s clear that mobile devices are becoming an important part of everyday life for the overwhelming majority of American teens and adults—and mobile advertising may overtake more traditional methods of marketing like radio commercials as consumers begin to spend more time with their cell phones.

Business owners need to consider how they want to target this group of potential customers. Because a mobile device is often viewed as more personal than a website ad or even a customer’s inbox, it’s essential to respect user privacy and to remain relevant without being intrusive. Text message advertising, mobile websites, mobile ads, apps, and QR codes are all great ways to market to customers through their cell phones—but your company must focus on giving customers a reason to interact with your through their devices.
